A bit about us

Now, a bit about me – the skipper!

I’ve been running charter angling boats since 1983, and I’ve got sea legs to prove it! For 18 years, I was at the helm of John Rawle’s boat while he was off fishing in the Florida Keys for part of the year – some of you might remember me from back then!

I first got into sea fishing when I was about 14, on a boat called Argonaut skippered by Owen Woolley. I landed my first cod and skate with him – and from that moment, I was absolutely hooked. By 16, I was crewing for John on his boat Vicky Emma, and by 18 I’d got my Boatman’s Licence and started skippering full-time. Fast forward to now and I’m proud to say I’m the longest-serving charter angling skipper in the Thames Estuary.

I hold a commercially endorsed RYA (Royal Yachting Association) licence, plus First Aid, Sea Survival, and VHF Radio qualifications – so rest assured, you’re in safe and experienced hands.

Whether you’ve never picked up a rod before or you’ve been angling for years, I’ll make sure you have a cracking day out on the water.

Driving down?

Pop this into your sat nav: 39 Berry Head Road, TQ5 9AA. When you see the two blue signs for the Prince William pub, you can drop your gear off there and head down the steps – you’ll see the visitor’s pontoon straight ahead.

Parking is available at the Breakwater Beach car park (TQ5 9AF) – just a few hundred yards further along the same road. From there, it’s a short stroll back along the harbour wall, past the marina office. There are public toilets there too (30p), and parking is coin-operated.

She’s licensed for up to 8 passengers whether you’re up for a day’s angling or just fancy a bit of sightseeing around the stunning coastline.

ILLUSION is what we like to call a “big” small boat – loads of deck space, comfortable seating for 8, a toilet on board, and a long shelter to keep you dry on those classic British drizzle days. She’s a proper sea boat too – solid and stable. We’re licensed to take 8 passengers on shorter mackerel trips, up to 6 for all-day charters, and a maximum of 4 for tuna fishing.

You’ll find ILLUSION moored right in the heart of Brixham’s beautiful harbour, just beside the famous fish market.

As she’s on a swinging mooring, once we’ve sorted a pick-up time, please head to the visitor’s pontoon, which is right in front of the Prince William pub, near the marina.

  • We have a full set of 8 spinning rods and reels for mackerel fishing to hire at no extra cost, although they must be paid for if lost overboard.
  • We also have a full set of downtiding rods and reels and a lighter set for uptiding on the reefs in shallower waters.
  • There will be a full set of 4 rods for shark and tuna fishing if needed.
  • The tackle can be seen in action on any of the “From The Water’s Edge videos” on my website.
  • All rigs and terminal tackle are free to use but there is a charge of £3 for the loss of the end tackle.
  • Please note that a lot of skippers charge extra for hire tackle and it is quite often inferior quality.
